With Russia’s annexationist invasion of Ukraine raging, and the political crisis in Georgia deepening, Howie Hawkins visited both countries as well as Poland and the Czech Republic this past fall. He met with unionists and social movement activists to learn about the situations they confront in the face of Russia’s war in Ukraine, Ukraine’s neoliberal Zelensky government and — following a deeply tainted election — installation of a pro-Russian president in Georgia by the legislature. Massive street demonstrations in the capital Tbilisi and other cities have been protesting the fraud. Howie will report on these struggles and strategies of the left in these difficult circumstances.

Ilya Budraitskis, who’s been writing extensively about Russia under Vladimir Putin, will present a perspective on Russian society and the Putin regime under the country’s war-centered economy and its massive battlefield casualties.
