New Green Horizons Author Guidelines

New Green Horizons (NGH) is a new publication on green political thought and action. The New Green Horizons editorial board invites authors to reach out with draft articles, proposals, and ideas. We encourage all greens, whether a long-time member or new to the movement, to submit articles!

Basic Criteria for Submissions

Please ensure your submission meets our basic criteria before sending it to the editorial board. What are the main requirements for articles?

  • Relevance. Submissions can refer to current events, trends, or actions, or explore and analyze Green political history. Articles addressing theory and analysis should directly relate to current events and conditions, offer fresh ideas or draw lessons from Green history to apply to the present, and be informative and interesting.
  • Critical thinking. We try to delve deeper into the structural causes of social processes, rather than reproduce the prevalent surface cliches. At the same time, we do not support unreasonable criticism and expect to see in the texts not only consistent criticism but also suggestions for possible systemic alternatives.
  • Originality. We generally prefer new articles not available from any other source, although translations from international sources not yet available in English are encouraged. Sources used should be quoted and referenced; plagiarism is unacceptable.

Submission Guidelines

We publish submissions in the following formats:

  • Blogs, newspaper-style short notes on current topics and field reports on actions.
  • Analysis, texts for a general audience with analysis and references as needed
  • Long Reads, long-form articles with in-depth discussion and references more similar to an academic journal article
  • Book Reviews, a short review and commentary on books relevant to greens
  • We are also open to other formats: interviews, cartoons, photojournalism, etc.

We recommend Articles to be a maximum of 10,000 words; Blogs and Reviews to be 1,000 words or less, excluding pictures, to allow for quick reads and updates. If an alternate format and/or length is needed, the Editorial Board invites proposals to discuss the idea.

Endnotes and References

We use endnotes for citing references to accommodate both Internet resources and printed books; please insert them directly into the text according to MLA style or similar style, i.e. Bookchin, Murray. The Ecology of Freedom. AK Press, 2005. If available on the Internet, please include the URL to access.

Writing Style

Feel free to use whatever writing style works best for you. However, you might consider mimicking the style of a newspaper if you are providing only a short Update or Letter to the Editor. For longer articles, you might follow a style similar to a leftist magazine or journal, such as Jacobin or Harbinger. Some standard references are the AP (Associated Press) Stylebook and Webster’s New World College Dictionary.

Licensing

We intend to generally publish New Green Horizons under terms of the Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 International license. If you would prefer some other attribution and/or license terms, please let the Editorial Board know in your submission.

Suggested Topics

These topics are considered a high priority for New Green Horizons, representing issues we feel need deeper discussion in the green movement. However, these are only suggestions; we welcome submissions on any topic meeting the basic criteria listed above!

  • Green organizing strategy; what should be Green strategy for after the 2024 elections?
  • Implementing the Green New Deal nationally and what that looks like locally. What does local control look like and how can we begin building those local institutions now in preparation for a national and global Green New Deal?
  • How do we properly acknowledge and unite class struggle with struggles against racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, colonization, etc., into a popular struggle against all forms of hierarchy that does not leave anyone out or advance one group at the expense of another?

What Is New Green Horizons?
